I first met Giusy Bettoni of C.L.A.S.S. two years ago at White Milan, a fashion tradeshow attended by over 16,000 buyers. She had curated a section dedicated to promoting sustainable designers and challenging perceptions around sustainability. At the time I was starting to work with some high-end Los Angeles based designers and was looking for luxury fabrics that met strict sustainability criteria. As a seamstress and designer, C.L.A.S.S. has been one of my favorite sources for sustainable fabrics. I got a chance to catch up with Bettoni and her team again during Milan fashion week this September, both at their showroom and at the So Critical So Fashion event.

With a belief that fragrances should not be fake, Juniper Ridge is the world’s only wild fragrance company. Each of Juniper Ridge’s products are made by harvesting plants, bark, moss, mushrooms and tree trimmings from deep in forests and deserts. Calling themselves backpackers and hikers rather than high end perfumers, their scents capture the smell of mountains and forests, distilling natural ingredients to make fragrances that will transport you to the Mojave Desert or deep into the Pacific Northwest.

Over the years we’ve seen designer Organic by John Patrick channel everything from urban traipses through Manhattan’s East Village to 19th century British photographs. This New York Fashion Week, the designer chose to aim higher for inspiration, as in, the stars and NASA photographs from the Gemini and Apollo moon missions. Drawn from the collection of John Siebert, the photographs were the recent stars of Lempertz’s recent photography auction, and an astral plane Patrick chose to draw from.

As New York Fashion Week kicked off, a private party at Market605, hosted by sustainable e-commerce site Helpsy offered attendees a chance to meet the shop’s designers while shopping a handpicked selection of exclusive items. Rachel Kibbe, who founded Helpsy, says the pop-up was a good way to not only support independent designers during New York Fashion Week, but also to showcase some of Helpsy own. “I think popups are becoming the main way for designers to circumvent Fashion Week madness, for whatever their reasons, whether it’s ideals, financial necessity, or whatever. Popups are a fantastic way for a brand to showcase, sell to, and interact with the customer. Not just the press,” Kibbe tells Ecouterre.

This is 18-year-old Reba Sikder in the jacket that my 12-year old grew out of two years ago. Thanks to the successive snow storms that hit Washington, D.C., we were lucky to have Reba stay with us for almost a week. We had the joy of introducing her to snow and sledding and hot chocolate. And now, unlike the snow that finally melted, we miss having Reba with us. Actually, we missed Reba the moment she was gone. Reba was here with one of International Labor Rights Forum’s longtime partners and one of my kids’ favorite house guests, Kalpona Akter, the head of the Bangladesh Center for Worker Solidarity.
