Sentiment is a funny thing. What is it about the human condition that makes us attach such fervent significance to even the most mundane of objects? To coin a phrase, when do our possessions begin to possess us? New York Times bestselling author Emily Spivack has a fair idea. In Worn Stories, Spivack collects more than 60 clothing-inspired narratives—or “memoirs in miniature”—from cultural figures such as Rosanne Cash, John Hodgeman, Simon Doonan, Greta Gerwig, Marcus Samuelsson, Cynthia Rowley, Piper Kerman, and Maira Kalman. Join Spivack at Pratt Institute’s Brooklyn Fashion + Design Accelerator on Wednesday for a visual tour of the garments that not only adorn and protect us but also serve as touchstones for the narratives we carry inside us. Ecouterre caught up with Spivack, who’s currently a visiting assistant professor at Pratt Institute’s fashion department, to learn more about the “porosity” of clothing, why people hold onto things that have long served their purpose, and the way “fast fashion” is changing the way we consume.

The following is excerpted from a speech that supermodel-activist Angela Lindvall delivered at the Natural Resources Defense Council’s “Clean by Design” luncheon at the Colony Club in New York City on Wednesday.

I’m mostly known for my work as a model, but I’m also known for my deep care and commitment to environmental awareness. In 2001, I created what was called the Collage Foundation. At that time, I was blown away to discover such alarming information about the state of our planet. Yet it wasn’t on the front page of all the newspapers. When I started Collage, I saw that fashion and media have a huge influence on the masses. Our mission at Collage was to use pop culture and media as a means to stimulate awareness and provide information and solutions for change.

The North Face has long been a household name in responsible and durable outdoor wear that appeals to the masses – from urban winter wear to hardcore extreme sports gear – with an impressive commitment to cruelty-free design for which it won the PETA award last year. The brand keeps going from strength to strength in terms of sustainable initiatives and has incorporated green design, local production and ethically-sourced materials into many elements of its work. Its focus on apparel has now been joined by bedding: as pioneers of the the Responsible Down Standard, the brand is committed to the humane treatment of animals in textile production. Ecouterre enjoyed a compelling interview with Director of Sustainability Adam Mott, who dished the dirt on the potential and challenges for local production, collaborations with environmental non-profits, and the impact of its Clothes the Loop project.

Linda Greer, NRDC, Natural Resources Defense Council, Clean by Design, China, eco-fashion, sustainable fashion, green fashion, ethical fashion, sustainable style, toxic pollution, toxic chemicals

Linda Greer ranks among the fashion industry’s leading “toxic avengers.” As director of the Natural Resources Defense Council’s five-year-old “Clean by Design” initiative, Greer is on the frontline of a sector burdened by high energy and water use and endemic, often catastrophic, pollution. Her Sisyphean task? To leverage the purchasing power of multinational brands and retailers to chip away at the environmental impacts of their manufacturing abroad, beginning with the biggest offender: China. As NRDC prepares to, in its own words, “aggressively expand” the program’s reach, Ecouterre caught up with Greer to learn about her “win-win” strategy, what the early days of Clean by Design were like, and how we can differentiate the “true-gooders” from the “greenwashers” in a post–corporate-social-responsibility world.

Looking for some food for thought? Drop by Pratt Institute’s Brooklyn Fashion + Design Accelerator on Thursday for a screening of Traceable, a documentary about the first world’s growing disconnect with the hands that make our clothes. Filmed in the aftermath of the collapse of the Rana Plaza garment factory in Bangladesh, a devastating event that killed 1,138 workers and maimed thousands more, Traceable follows Toronto designer Laura Siegel as she struggles to reconcile her role in the fashion industry with the anonymous artisans who shoulder it. Ecouterre reached out to director Jennifer Sharpe to suss out Traceable’s underlying message, the importance of transparency, in the supply chain, and which apparel firms are doing “traceability” right.

On second anniversary of the collapse of Rana Plaza, a disaster that killed 1,138 garment workers and injured thousands more in Bangladesh, one question appears to be on the mind of commentators, journalists, politicians and activists alike: Two years on, what has really changed? The answer is relatively simple: not that much. Workers are still earning poverty wages, union organisers are still being threatened and attacked, and workers and their families are still are awaiting full compensation.

With the “lofty ambitions” of becoming an entirely waste-free retailer, BeGood certainly have their work cut out for them. But they are managing to tackle to issue of waste in the fashion industry with a grace, grit and sense of humor that is refreshingly direct. The team tell it how it is, arguing the case for eco fashion by noting that big retail is the second biggest polluting industry in the world, and that organic fabric is stronger and softer than regular material. Their designs are as straightforward as their opinions about sustainable fashion, offering a collection of timeless garments – think sustainable alternative to GAP – that do not get caught up in seasonal fads. Co-founder Mark Spera discussed how the designers go about ensuring they produce in a way that is as green as possible in this Q&A with Ecouterre.
