To say that Samantha Pleet’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection is epic isn’t a matter of hyperbole. Presented at the Wolverine store in Manhattan’s Lower East Side at New York Fashion Week on Wednesday, “Sands of Time” draws its cues from the ancient societies of the Fertile Crescent and the 19th century explorers who uncovered their stories. “I wanted pieces that could be displayed in a museum,” Pleet tells Ecouterre, describing her prints and silhouettes as “almost biblical” and “mythic” in nature. No huge surprises at Costello Tagliapietra’s Spring/Summer 2013 show at New York Fashion Week on Thursday. The burly duo, who are living proof that two heads are better than one, dispatched a heady procession of dresses that rippled down the runway in fresh, painterly prints and vivid jewel-toned solids. “We played with the way color interacted with itself,” Robert Costello, who credits AirDye’s water-saving technology for the intensity of the palette, tells Ecouterre backstage. “We wanted to capture the moment of falling in love.” (Full review to follow.)

Mara Hoffman spiced up the runway at New York Fashion Week on Saturday with her colorful prints and swimsuits. The extensive collection included long dresses, tunics, sports jackets, mid-calf skirts, and shorts. As usual, Hoffman left no details unattended in selecting an exotic, artfully crafted set of accessories to complement her designs. This time the designer chose to work with Taylor Patterson of Fox Fodder Farm in Brooklyn to create Polynesian-inspired accessories constructed from plants. (Full review to follow.)

Deserts aren’t the barren wildernesses they’re made out to be. Like the vivid bouquets that spring unexpectedly from the arid landscape, Laura Siegel’s Spring/Summer 2013 line juxtaposes somber hues of olive, umber, and terracotta with bursts of neon, electric pink, and emerald. “The collection is about life in the desert and what that means from different cultures’ perspectives,” says Siegel, who presented at New York Fashion Week on Wednesday. The Parsons The New School for Design graduate harnesses artisanal techniques like leather-embossing, embroidery, weaving, and Shibori dyeing by collaborating with cooperatives in India and Peru. Whatever you do, don’t call Osklen an eco-fashion brand, Oskar Metsavaht, the Brazilian label’s founder, tells Ecouterre backstage at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week on Tuesday. Consider it instead a purveyor of luxury goods that happens to use ecological materials—fish leather and vegetable-dyed waste silk among them—and processes. “Endless Summer,” Osklen’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection, captures the perfect summer’s day on Ipanema’s boardwalk, where “Brazilian soul meets California dreaming,” Metsavaht says. “The end result is neither retro nor futuristic. Inspired from his travels from Mykonos to Mumbai, John Bartlett channeled a masculine yet soft and laid-back style at his Spring/Summer 2013 show at New York Fashion Week on Tuesday. “The idea is kind of a travelogue. There’s a real Mediterranean flavor mixed in with a very exotic Indian flavor,” Bartlett tells Ecouterre. Designing with the “plant-based man” in mind, Bartlett stuck with all-natural—and animal-friendly—linen for his looks, marrying his love of travel with his enthusiasm for yoga (the “om” symbol features heavily as a print). The result? Casual pinstripe suits and ties, long bermuda shorts, and even an easy-breezy djellaba for those hot summer afternoons. (Full review to follow.)

A chance encounter with the work of photographer Francesca Woodman provided the kernel of inspiration that led to Suzanne Rae’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection. Presented at the Philippine Center at New York Fashion Week on Tuesday—Rae was born in the Philippines but raised in New Jersey—the minimalist range “explores a woman’s curious ability to be both delicate and strong.” (Full review to follow.)

Upcycling impresario Christopher Raeburn returned to London Fashion Week on Sunday with his Spring/Summer 2013 women’s collection—the second he’s dedicated to the fairer sex. His springboard for inspiration? The concept of flight, or more specifically, the first female aviators. Raeburn stumbled upon a cache of ’50s-era flight maps, printed on silk instead of paper so pilots could find their way to safety even in a downpour. (“The intricate print is as interesting to decipher as it is visually impressive,” Raeburn says.) The reclaimed materials set the tone for the entire lineup, which he punctuated with laminated lace, decommissioned parachute nylons, quilting derived from recycled plastic bottles, and a subtle camouflage print on ripstop cotton.

“Dirty White Gold’s” Leah Borromeo Talks GM Cotton, Farmer Suicides

As Emmy Rossum and Zooey Deschanel like to remind us, cotton is the fabric of our lives. Yet its snow-white facade masks a less-than-rosy reality. Leah Borromeo, a journalist and filmmaker based in London, wants to unravel the complex web of “debts, pesticides, and suicides” that surrounds the fibers of our clothing. Nearly 300,000 Indian cotton farmers have killed themselves over the years to escape the poverty trap of industrialized agriculture, some by drinking the very pesticides with which they farm, according to Borromeo. We caught up with the self-proclaimed troublemaker to learn more about her crowd-funded documentary, The Cotton Film: Dirty White Gold, the human cost of cheap fashion, and why we need greater traceability and accountability in the fashion industry.
